Did you know that over 90% of women over the age of 30 will suffer from cellulite one time or another in their lives?
And did you also know that very few men have to battle with cellulite, maybe just 5-10%? Yes, so unfair, we know, we know…
But hey, at least you now know you’re not alone and most other women around you have cellulite too, albeit to varying extent and sometimes, on different spots.
Since our in-store theme now is Every Body is Beautiful, we’d like to run a blog post on cellulite.
So here goes!
FAQs on CELLULITE
Q: What is cellulite?
A: Well, the answer depends on who you ask, haha! Some might tell you cellulite refers to the orange peel or cottage cheese skin condition that you see on our body, especially on the thighs, buttocks and even tummy areas. Some people also describe it as dimpled skin.
But if you ask a doctor, you might get a more scientific-sounding reply like this one from SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN
It’s a condition that affects 90 percent of women and 10 percent of men, mostly in industrial nations.
As women start approaching menopause, estrogen starts decreasing. From 25 to 35 is when you start seeing the appearance of cellulite. Estrogen has an impact on the blood vessels. When estrogen starts to decrease, you lose receptors in blood vessels and thighs, so you have decreased circulation. With decreased circulation you get less oxygen and nutrition to that area, and with that we see a decrease in collagen production…. [Also, at this time] fat cells start becoming larger, [they] begin protruding through the collagen [and become the bumpy fat known as cellulite].
Women tend to get cellulite around knees, saddlebags and buttocks, because they have three layers of fat in these areas [instead of just one]. Women also have three levels of fat in the stomach and in the triceps areas.
Q: Do skinny people get cellulite too?
A: Like we’d mentioned above, some 90% of women in the world face this problem. And yes, even famous bodies like Jennifer Lopez and Kim Kardashian have cellulite too.
Click HERE for pics of celebrities with cellulite problems.
But it’s worthwhile noting that while cellulite is not specific to overweight people, excess weight may worsen the condition.
Q: So exactly how is cellulite formed?
A: We have strands of connective tissue under our skin that connect fat and muscle to the skin. Fat is a very soft substance, so it does not keep our skin taut and tight like muscle does. This can result in the fat bulging out from our skin.
Women tend to store most our body fat in the hips and thighs areas, where the skin is thinner than normal skin. This makes the cellulite condition even more obvious, resulting in the orange peel that we see.
(Conversely, men tend to deposit fat in the stomach region instead of the lower body. Since the stomach is more padded and also has a relatively smaller surface area, thus you don’t usually see cellulite condition there. Oh, men are so blessed!)
Q: When does cellulite usually appear?
A: Well, there are many factors that can cause cellulite to form, including hormones, diet, lifestyle and genetics. So it can actually happen to anyone at any age.
However, it is probably worth pointing out that cellulite formation tends to be fairly common in women during hormonal changes. So yea, watch out when you’re in puberty, pregnancy or menopause. A woman’s hormones are usually responsible for regulating the flow of blood, fat, connective tissue and lymphatic drainage.
Cellulite occurs also because of excess toxins and waste products remaining in the body, which are not removed in the digestion process. So diet habits and lifestyle changes could also contribute to cellulite formation.
Q: What causes cellulite to form?
A: Quite many factors, and here are some of them:
1. Lack of exercise
2. Overeating & ‘wrong’ diet
3. Poor circulation
4. Toxin accumulation
5. Water retention
6. Poor metabolic rate
8. Hormonal imbalance
And the list goes on… but by and large, you need to note these three main contributing factors to cellulite formation:
- Poor Diet
- Lack of exercise
Firstly hormonal related cellulite can occur with anyone, no matter what weight you are. So even the young and skinny gals are not spared.
Next, a poor diet and lack of exercise will obviously lead to an increase in fat reserves, but more importantly can increase unwanted levels of toxins that can lead to inflammation. It’s this inflammation of fat cells that is ultimately the main cause of cellulite and NOT an increase in general fat deposits. So ladies, watch your diet and exercise the right way.
Q: Are there different types of cellulite?
A: Yes, cellulite can come in dfferent grades and variations. There are three grades, ranging from zero to three, and two variations: soft and hard.
Grade Zero: There is no visible cellulite, even if the skin is pinched. Overall, the skin looks and feels smooth.
Grade One: Cellulite is not evident when you’re standing or sitting, but if the skin is pinched, it becomes noticeable.
Grade Two: When standing, there appears to be cellulite, but when you lay down it disappears.
Grade Three: The skin looks dimpled regardless if you are standing or sitting and always when you pinch it.
It might be harder for a layperson to differentiate between soft and hard cellulite, so you might need a doctor’s diagnosis. Anyway, just for your knowledge:
Soft Cellulite: This type of cellulite is more noticeable because it doesn’t attach itself to the muscle. It’s softer, saggy, moves around more and usually affects larger areas of the body. Unlike hard cellulite, it sits closer to the surface, making it easier to treat.
Hard Cellulite: Hard cellulite is harder to get rid of because it’s concentrated and lives close to or on the muscle. Hard cellulite tends to occur in more athletic body types and is harder to see with the naked eye. In some cases, hard cellulite can be sensitive to the touch.
Q: Can cellulite be treated?
A: Some believe it can, and some do not. But practically all schools of thought advocate that cellulite can be reduced and skin condition can be improved significantly with the right diet, exercise and products.
Yes, you can develop an Anti-Cellulite Strategy to combat dimpled skin! At least that’s what we here at Sa Sa believe.
Q: Do anti-cellulite products work?
A: We are not in the business of selling miracle products, and neither are we qualified to dispense medical advice. But we have been in the beauty business long enough to know that yes, anti-cellulite products can work as part of your entire Anti-Cellulite Strategy, but you will need to also work on your diet and exercise regime.
What most creams can do is to address the fat, stimulate micro-stimulation and or help in collagen production, and all these are good to comat cellulite. Some products can transport fats into the right places (mitochondria) for us to convert fats into energy Some caffeine creams will help to block fat formation. So yes, when used in conjunction as part of a total program, the right anti-cellulite products can work wonders and can even help you achieve your anti-cellulite goals much much faster.
Q: Do you have any suggestions on how to make some lifestyle improvements to help combat cellulite?
A: We will share some suggestions which are not only good for reducing the appearance of cellulite, but are essentially good lifestyle habits that will make you healthier!
• Improve your diet by watching your fat, sugar and sodium intake. Remember, everything in moderation.
• Vitamins and minerals is good for healthy skin and detoxification of the body. So yes, eat your fruits, veggies and fish oils.
• Avoid excessie caffeine intake, especially coffee. If possible, limit yourself to just a cup of coffee a day. The combination of coffee with no exercise leads to constriction of blood vessels.
• Reduce your stress level.
• Exercise regularly!
Q: Can you share more about the Anti-Cellulite Strategy?
A: Sure! Just remember four things.
One, choose the right anti-cellulite products. Two, watch what you eat. Three, exercise. And four, avoid restrictive clothings.
For choosing the right anti-cellulite products, we strongly recommend the Collistar range of body products. We will share more later.
For diet, well, we’re not asking you to go on a diet, you just have to make several simple changes. Like we’d mentioned earlier, eat more fruits and vegetables, and cut down on saturated fat. In fact, it has been observed that women who eat more organic foodstuff have less cellulite.
For working out, you will need to be disciplined and give at least 30 minutes three days a week of workout to make better the outcomes of your anti-cellulite products cream. If you’re really short of time, then focus on the part of your body where the cellulite is most prominent. For instance, go jogging or brisk walking if you wish to rid cellulite at the back of your thighs.
And oh, there are added benefits to working out too. Workout improves blood circulation to eliminate toxins. Apart from that, workout also burns off any surplus fat.
Q: You talked about not wearing restrictive clothings, why?
A: Some doctors have observed that cellulite is nearly always observed where pantylines are, or where restrictive elastic has been worn frequently.
Basically, overly-tight elastic or clothes cut off circulation. And pantyhose can make things worse, as the pantyhose forces the lymphatic drainage back into the body.
Cellulite is always underneath where the elastics go, and if you draw an invisible line where the cellulite is, you will see where the panty lines are. Surprisingly, thongs are better when it comes to circulation.
